Fireworks Safety Tips
If your state allows the use of consumer fireworks, remember that even legal fireworks can cause injury if not used correctly. Follow these essential safety guidelines to celebrate responsibly:
- Obey Local Laws: Know and follow all local regulations regarding the purchase and use of fireworks.
- Buy from Reliable Sources: Only purchase from licensed and reputable sellers. Avoid illegal or homemade fireworks.
- Read and Follow Instructions: Always read and follow the manufacturer’s directions. Pay attention to recommended safety distances.
- Use Open Space: Light fireworks in a clear, open area away from homes, buildings, trees, vehicles, and other flammable materials.
- Keep Water Nearby: Have a bucket of water, garden hose, or fire extinguisher ready in case of a fire. A first-aid kit is also recommended.
- Designate a Sober Adult: Assign one responsible, sober adult to handle and ignite all fireworks. Alcohol and fireworks don’t mix.
- Supervise Children: Never allow children to handle fireworks. Keep them at a safe distance and under close supervision at all times.
- Maintain a Safe Distance: All spectators should remain a safe distance away from where fireworks are being lit.
- Dispose Properly: After fireworks are used, soak them in water and place them in a metal trash bin away from buildings. Never dispose of hot or smoldering fireworks.
- Protect Pets & Wildlife: Keep pets indoors and away from fireworks. Avoid lighting fireworks near wildlife habitats.
- Check Local Conditions: Be mindful of wind and weather—strong gusts can alter the path of fireworks and increase fire risk.
- Be Prepared for Emergencies: Know your local emergency contact number and be ready to call if needed.
- Never Experiment: Do not attempt to make or modify fireworks. Always use them as directed by the manufacturer.
