How Do Build A DIY Mortar Rack

🛠️ How to Build a DIY Mortar Rack
Elevated Fireworks™ Guide for Backyard Pyro Setups
If you're planning to launch reloadable shells or want a safer and more organized way to fire your fireworks, building a DIY mortar rack is the way to go. Not only does it improve stability and safety, but it also gives your backyard show a professional touch.
Here’s everything you need to build one yourself—no pyrotechnics degree required!
🔧 What is a Mortar Rack?
A mortar rack is a wooden or metal frame that holds mortar tubes securely in place. These tubes are used to launch reloadable aerial shells into the sky. A well-built rack helps ensure that your fireworks fire straight up and don’t tip over—a must for safe shows.
📋 Tools & Materials You’ll Need
- (3) 24" long 2x4 boards (for base and sides)
- (2) 14" long 2x4 boards (for tube spacing)
- (1) Box of screws (2.5" to 3")
- Drill or screwdriver
- Saw (if cutting your own wood)
- 10+ fiberglass or HDPE mortar tubes
- Optional: Handles or wheels for mobility
⚠️ Note: Never use PVC pipes—they can shatter dangerously under pressure.
🧨 Step-by-Step: How to Build Your Mortar Rack
1. Build the Base
Lay two 24" 2x4s parallel to each other, spaced about 12–14 inches apart. Connect them with two 14" 2x4s at both ends, forming a rectangle. This is your sturdy base.
2. Attach Vertical Supports
Screw the third 24" board upright to the middle of the base. This backboard helps stabilize the tubes.
3. Mount the Tubes
Secure each mortar tube vertically between the front and back boards using screws and strapping if needed. Space them evenly (about 2" apart) for safety and ease of loading.
4. Add Final Reinforcements
Recheck screws and joints to make sure everything is tight. For added safety, you can mount the rack on a piece of plywood or weigh it down with bricks or sandbags.
💡 Pro Tips from Elevated Fireworks™
- Paint or label each tube for easy identification during your show
- Number the tubes to match your firing order
- Angle a few tubes slightly outward if firing multiple racks (never inward!)
- Always set up on a level surface away from buildings, trees, and spectators
